Frequently Asked Questions
Solaris
Q1: What accounts can install and run the Extreme software on Unix systems?
A1: To install and run the software, you need to have root
privileges, so that you can access the SCSI subsystem.
Q2: What environment does the Extreme software run in?
A2: The Extreme tools are designed to use the Motif widget libraries. All
Solaris installs include the Motif libraries Any window manager should be
acceptable, but twm's requirement that the user place new windows by hand
will quickly get annoying to you. CDE and MWM work well.
Q3: What version of the OS does the software work in?
A3: Each platform is compiled and tested under a given OS revision. We can
only guarantee that it works under that configuration, but later versions of
the OS should work also. If not, it's a compatibility issue on the part of
the OS. We may be able to recompile in some instances.
Solaris (sparc) 8
Q4: How do I install the software?
A4: If installing from the CD, simply run the setup.ssol executible in the
root directory of the CD or wherever it was downloaded off of the web.
Assuming that you have gateways and DNS access set up properly on the system
the program will give you the option of checking the web for newer versions.
Simply select the software which you have purchased or would like to try
(XDEVssol is recommended for the trial since it includes the bulk of our
offerings) and it will either download from the web or install the software
which you've selected.
If you do not have a "direct connection" to the internet, and must connect
via an HTTP proxy server, then hit the Settings button and type in the server
name or address of the proxy.
Other options in the Settings page include the ability to
download the update files without installing them. This will allow you to
download the software on one system and move the software to another system
that does not have web access to do the install. Copy the files from the
temp directory (/tmp/EPS/*) onto a CD, jump drive, multiple floppies, or
other media transport and then run setup again once installed on the other
system. In the case of floppies, you'll need to copy all of the files to
destination's hard drive before
running.
Q5: How does the licensing work?
A5: Trials are software licensed. To set this up, cd into the install
directory and run ./.setup_license, then call EPS at
(508) 278-3600 x1 to get a trial license code. Afterwards, run
./.generate_key.
Purchased software requests licenses via the network from
License Server which runs on Windows and uses a USB or parrallel port dongle
to store licensing information. To configure this, modify the
./config/common.ini file and change the LicenseServer field to the
appropriate IP address or hostname. When a program is started up, it
reserves an appropriate license, and when it shuts down it releases that
license again for use by other
systems.
